Vegetation |
Despite very sparse rainfall, the park has a wide range of plentiful vegetation, including 300 species of phanerogams and ferns. On the cays, there are plants like the hierba de vidrio and the campanilla de plata and the bushes include romerillo and willow. The most common trees are the mangrove, the uvero de playa and the botoncillo. In the mangrove swamps there are underground beds of thalassia testudinum with leaves similar to those of grass and strong stems. And in the salt shallows, one finds grasses like the saltbrush and the cují yaque and cují torcido shrubs. In the caducifoliar forests located on Chichiriviche hill, in the only mountainous area of the park, there is a dry jungle with a large variety of trees, including oak, copito, indio desnudo, cruceta and mountain rose, etc.

Fauna |
Chichiriviche Hill is home to mammals like the araguato monkey, the zorro cangrejero, the rabipelado, the paca and deer, among others. The sea birds include numerous species like the green-winged duck, the soisola, the gannet, the scissortail, the gray heron and the flamingo, etc., while among the land birds one finds the turkey buzzard, the bluish sparrow hawk, the limpkin, the hummingbird and the tyrant flycatcher, among others. This is one of the most important places where, as Venezuelan poet Crespo put it the birds of Venezuela and of other countries gather to calm their wanderlust, love each other, discuss their right to the highest branch and found a family. It is the Fauna de Cuare Sanctuary created in 1972 and occupied by 79% of Venezuelas water birds and 66% of those from abroad. The park has numerous sea resources, as well, where one can observe a large variety of fish. This sea wealth is its most important biological capital.
