The
purest expression of Andean tradition,
colonial jewel of Táchira State and the pride
of Venezuela’s tourism, San Pedro del Río,
located in Ayacucho Municipality, is a very
special town showcasing an architecture that
is typical of the region.
Its foundation dates back to between 1840 and
1852, under its first name of “Aldea Río de
las Casas;” later, as of May 23, 1905, it
became known as “Castro” Municipality and
today it is the parish of San Pedro del Río,
with a capital city of the same name.
Covering an area of 52 km2 on the banks of the
Lobaterita River at 765 m.a.s.l., it lies in a
bend of our Andean range amid a landscape of
admirable natural beauty and indescribable
enchantment, a scene of peace and tranquility,
simple, cozy and austere.
Its architecture today dates back more than
100 years. Its elegant church, a mixture of
several styles, brings to mind Greece and
Rome. Visitors are welcomed by well laid-out
streets and modern buildings.
