> Climate in the parks
- El Cajas Park
Between 12 and 20°C. The upland moors are located in the high plateaus, while the rest of the province enjoys humid and semi-humid mesothermal climates.

- Yasuni
Located on the northwestern border with Peru, this park is hot and humid with an average annual temperature of 24°C.

- El Boliche National Recreation Area
The climate ranges from icy cold on the high peaks to humid and semi-humid mesothermal in the high plateau moorlands to tropical monsoon on the lower lying lands and the coast. The average temperature ranges from 15 to 17°C.

- Limoncocha Ecological Sanctuary and Cuyabano Fauna Reproduction Preserve
The temperature fluctuates between 25 and 30°C. A large portion of this province has been set aside for oil production.

> Typical dishes in the national park regions
- El Cajas Park
Tortillas, tamales, máchica (toasted corn flour mixed with sugar and cinnamon), chicharrón (fried pork), llapingacho (cheese and potato omelet), blood sausage, buñuelos (fritters), fig sweet and pig’s foot soup

- Machalilla Park
Viche, ripe plantain soup, sweet potato, peanuts, corn, cassava, and fish heads.
Fish or shellfish stew.
Black salt, peanut paste sauce to accompany baked or fried ripe plantain and rice.
Green empanadas (turnovers), patacones (banana chips), bolones, cassava bread and pastelillo (small pastry).

- Sangay
Ayampaco with some kind of meat, chicken or fish and wrapped in plantain leaves.
Tamales and salad of palm hearts, fried cassava or cassava in a tamale, roast beef, guanta, guatusa or armadillo meat, star fruit and guava.

- Podacarpus
Lozano tamale, choclotandas (corn paste mixture wrapped in leaves), chanfaína (stew of pork offal, potatoes and rice), olla podrida (meat and vegetable stew), cabbage soup, plantains, potatoes and zambo. Cured meat cooked over coals, repe and plantain soup.

- El Boliche National Recreation Area
The region’s specialty is chugchucaras, consisting of fritada (a mixture of fried foods), cuero tostado (toasted pork rind), fried maqueño, small flour turnovers, toasted canguil (small grained corn) and fried potatoes accompanied by degrained corn and fried pork, hot pepper and onion sauce.
Queso de hoja, alullas and Salcedo fruit ice cream are very traditional dishes.

- Churute Mangrove Swamp Ecological Sanctuary
Thick soup with plantain balls. Fish with onions and cassava. Caldo de manguera, a soup of pork blood sausage and plantain. Catfish soup. Fish or shellfish stew. Bandera, cebiche (raw fish or seafood marinated in lemon juice with onion and hot pepper), seco (a dry alcoholic beverage), aguado (fruit juice with water, sugar and eau-de-vie) and tripe.

> Historical background of the park regions
- El Cajas Park
Cuenca, the city founded by Gil Ramírez Dávalos on April 12, 1557 and which became independent on November 3, 1820, is located in the region.

The Battle of Tarqui, fought against Peru on February 27, 1829 preceded Ecuador’s republican period.

The city was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site in November 1999.

- Machalilla Park
The capital was founded on March 12, 1535 by Captain Francisco Pacheco.

Manabí gained its independence on October 18, 1820.

The Province was created with the issuing of the Territorial Division Act, article 13, on June 25, 1824.

- Yasuni
The Yasuni National Park, declared by UNESCO to be a “World Biosphere Sanctuary,” has Huaorani inhabitants and is a biogenetic preserve noted for its wide assortment of fauna and flora.

- Sangay
The Province of Morona Santiago was created by Legislative Decree of December 15, 1920 and its name was changed on February 24, 1954 to that of Eastern Province of Morona Santiago by the Emergency Decree Law that reformulated the Wasteland Act and Ecuador’s Territorial Division Act.

- Podocarpus
Loja was initially founded on December 8, 1546, but its second and definitive foundation took place on December 8, 1548 and in both cases Captain Alonso de Mercadillo was in charge.

Loja’s independence was proclaimed on November 18, 1820 and the Province was created on June 25, 1824.

- El Boliche National Recreation Area
The capital was founded in 1534 and its independence was proclaimed on November 11, 1820. Latacunga became a canton on June 25, 1824.

- Churute Mangrove Swamp Ecological Sanctuary
Santiago de Guayaquil was first founded on July 25, 1535 by Captain Sebastián Moyano de Benalcázar in the Dimas estuary.

Captain F. Zaera was responsible for its second founding in 1536.

Finally, on July 25, 1538, at the foot of Mt. Santa Ana, Francisco de Orellana founded the city of Santiago de Guayaquil for the third time.

Its independence was proclaimed on October 9, 1820.
