The
preserve is an extraordinary 135 000 hectare
(1 350 km2) geographic space in the Department
of the Beni, whose remarkable ecological
composition has attracted the attention of
researchers and environmentalists due to its
biotic wealth and the presence of native
Amazon groups. The preserve is known to be
home to 100 species of mammals and 2 000
recorded species of vascular plants. Three
South American biogeographic provinces come
together at the Beni Biological Station: the
Amazon, the "Chaco" (scrub and
swampy plains covering parts of Paraguay,
Bolivia and Argentina) and the
"Cerrado," or savannah.

There
are flights from La Paz to the city of San
Borja. From there, it is a 50 km. drive along
the San Borja-Trinidad gravel road to "El
Povenir" operations center. The best time
of the year to visit the EBB is the dry
season, from May to October. Seasonal flooding
during the rainy season makes accessibility
difficult.
