The Amboró National Park is located in the Department of Santa Cruz in the so-called “elbow of the Andes” where the western range turns abruptly southward. The Park and the integrated management zone together cover an area of 637 600 hectares and the Park itself accounts for 442 500 hectares. The climate is mild at the higher altitudes and hot in the low-lying areas. It possesses a wide range of humid mountain ecosystems with sub-Andean and foot-of-the-mountain rain forests, home to a large biological diversity. Vaccination against yellow fever is recommended and tourists are counseled to bring lightweight clothing, long-sleeved shirts, boots, rainwear, sunscreen, mosquito netting, a flashlight, a water canteen, a first-aid kit containing an antiophidic and insect repellent. Groups should not enter the park without a trained guide.

Access
It is a 45-minute flight or 16-hour bus ride from La Paz to Santa Cruz, or an 8-hour drive from Cochabamba. The park is accessible by road from either of the two cities. From Santa Cruz, it is 102 km to Cochabamba by the new Montero-Buena Vista highway. The old highway to Cochabamba, via Samaipata is a little longer at 107 km.

Flora
The park’s plant life is extremely varied with 2 961 species of vascular plants, 1 193 genera and 199 families. An outstanding group among the enormous variety of plants are the giant arboreal ferns (Cyathea Alsophyla) found in the cloud forests. The trees in the park include the mara, or American mahogany, the asai palm, the mountain pine trees (Podocarpus spp.), and the walnut tree (Juglans boliviana), together with a huge variety of orchids.

Fauna
Some 127 species of mammals have been recorded, among them 43 species of bats. The large mammals include the Andean bear or jucumari, the jaguar or American tiger and the anteater. There are a very large group of animals endemic to the park: 105 species of reptiles and 73 amphibian species, among them 50 species of toads. There are 812 species of birds, the most interesting of which are the pava de copete (Pauxi unicornis), the mutún copete de piedra (Crax unicornis), the pava militar (Ara militaris), the aquatic blackbird, the gallito de las rocas, the paraba barba azul and the Andean condor.

Rivers
Hydrographically, the park is situated in the Mamoré subbasin of the Amazon Basin, with its important rivers like the Ichilo, Yapacaní, Surutú and San Mateo. The Yapacaní, which at some points is as wide as 800 meters, is particularly important. This river must necessarily be crossed, either by vehicle, on foot or by callapo, the vessel used by the community’s dwellers. The Surutú River, for its part, is located near Buena Vista. Canoeing and rafting activities are possible on both rivers, depending upon the season.

Tourist attractions
Siberia
This cloud forest has an exceptionally wide variety of flowers and is particularly appropriate for bird watching. Visitors can engage in expeditions, mountain climbing, excursions, observation hikes, mountain bicycling, nature photography, bird watching and flower observation.

Mucuñucú
Set in the middle of the tropical forest amid abundant vegetation, this area is one of the most frequently visited because of its 40-meter high waterfall and lovely pool and cave-filled river.
