Gastronomy
Among
the typical dishes of the department there
are:

Butter Beans: a type of large bean, very
tasty, which is prepared seasoned with chili
pepper and stewed.

Morusa: purée of butter beans with roast
beef or pork.

Spicy butter beans: spicy butter bean stew
with milk, eggs and fresh cheese.

Carapulcra
stew: parboiled dried potato stewed with
pork and chicken meat, different chili
pepper varieties, garlic and other species.

Tejas:
traditional dessert made of dried lemon,
figs or pecan nuts filled with blancmange
and coated with caramel and sugar.

Chapanas:
sweet of cassava flour and brown sugar-loaf.

liqueur with a base of fermented grape
juice.

Festival(February)
Province of Chincha, District of El Carmen
Opportunity to see Afro-Peruvian dances in all
their splendor during the Dancing competition
held in the Coliseum of Chincha. In addition,
there are handicraft, vinicultural,
gastronomical fairs, carnival parades in the
main streets of the city, among other things.

Festival
(March)
Provinces of Chincha and Ica, Districts of
Chincha and Ica
This festival celebrates the grape harvest and
the abundance of wine in the region. As part
of the celebrations, fairs, competitions,
float parades, musical festivals and parties
are held. One of the favorite dances is Festejo
(Afro-Peruvian dance). The Vendimia queen is
chosen and crowned, and accompanied by her
court, she executes the treading of the grapes
to extract the juice that will be converted
into liqueur.
Celebration
of the Lord of Luren
(October)
Province of Ica, District of Ica
Year by year, thousands of devotees arrive in
Ica to renew their faith through worship of
this image of Christ crucified; on the central
day of the celebration, the image goes through
the city from nightfall until sunrise of the
following day. The origin of the devotion of
the Crucified Lord of Luren, patron saint of
the city of Ica, goes back to the year 1570;
according to the legend, this image was coming
from Lima when it got lost in the desert, and
later was found, mysteriously, in a lonely
place called Luren.
Virgin
of Carmen in Chincha
(December)
Province of Chincha, District of El Carmen
Special cult of the Virgin of Carmen, known in
the area as La Peoncita. It is
celebrated particularly in the area of El
Carmen and El Guayabo; as part of the
festivities, groups of youngsters execute the
Dance of Los Negritos and Las
Pallitas.
Folklore
In Ica, Peruvian coastal traditions are
preserved, such as Peruvian Paso Horses, cock
fighting, and in particular, Afro-Peruvian
music is developed. Ica preserves the
tradition of Peruvian dances of African origin
such as Festejo and Alcatraz. In
addition, the practicing of traditional
medicine is maintained.
