The department of La Guajira is made up of La
Guajira Peninsula and part of the foothills of
Santa Marta’s Sierra Nevada. The peninsula
is a semi-desert region and lower Guajira is
less dry, but the foothills of the Sierra
Nevada are humid and are farmed and used for
stockbreeding activities.
- Riohacha, the departmental capital founded
in 1545 by German citizen Nicolás de
Federmán, is located on the banks of the
Ranchería River.
- The temperature in the city is approximately
28 degrees centigrade. It is situated at a
height of 3 masl and has a population of
roughly 100 000 inhabitants.
- For those wishing to travel overland, the
city has a bus terminal where they will find
transportation to all parts of the country.
- Purchases should be made only at sites that
guarantee the products that are sold. Do not
buy jewelry or other items from street
vendors.
- Drink only bottled water to be sure of its
quality.
- In the city, the shopping centers and
business offices in general are open from 8:30
a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Riohacha has a widespread banking system,
including automated teller machines. Credit
cards and dollars are accepted.
