The islands are on the subtropical level with dry and very dry climates and temperatures ranging between 18 and 22°C. The ice cold Humboldt current born in southern Chile washes the shores of the Galapagos Island and has an enormous influence on them.

Cebiches (raw fish or seafood marinated in lemon juice with onion and hot pepper) and all kinds of seafood and fish dishes are available in the Galapagos. For some years now, tourists have been asking for sea cucumbers, which are internationally known for the flavor of their pulp. Their fishing is strictly regulated today to keep them from being overfished.

Friar Tomás de Berlanga accidentally landed in the Archipelago on March 10, 1535. The Galapagos were officially incorporated by Ecuador on February 12, 1832. The province was first created on May 29, 1861 and for the second time on December 17, 1957. The third and final creation of the province under the name of Galapagos occurred on February 18, 1973 during the government of Major General Guillermo Rodríguez Lara.
The Galapagos were declared by UNESCO to be a World Natural Heritage site and Biosphere Reserve.
