Los Roques Archipelago is made up of 42 small islands located 166 km from the port of La Guaira, off the central coast of Venezuela in the Caribbean Sea. A National Park because of its abundant marine fauna and flora, experts recognize it as an undersea paradise. Since there are only some small cabins for lodging, it is important to follow the recommendations of the authorities and travel agents. Because of its closeness to Caracas, however, it is possible to make short trips to the archipelago’s islands while staying on yachts.

Access
There are flights every day from Margarita and Maiquetía to Los Roques. The Archipelago can also be reached by boat from La Guaira, a city to the northeast of Caracas. Some tourist operators offer complete packages to the Islands.

Tourist Attractions
El Gran Roque
This is one of the largest islands, which shares with the others white sand beaches and a transparent turquoise-bottomed sea that offers an unforgettable spectacle. There are several lagoons and a high lying area called the El Mirador, a lookout point that affords a fine view of the magnificent landscape. The island has a landing field and several areas for lodging and camping, restaurants and the old Dutch Lighthouse.

Francisquí Cay
Many tourists frequent the cays in the Archipelago. One of the favorites is the Francisquí Cay located off El Gran Roque. The Cay is made up of large islands of a sort joined together by sand banks. If offers both tranquil seas and tides. There are excellent camping areas and places for diving and snorkeling.

The Park’s Fauna and Flora
There are a large assortment of birds and of marine fauna and flora in the Los Roques area. The birds are particularly numerous and varied, numbering about 92 species, including the migratory birds that arrive from North America during the northern winter. Those that are most easily distinguishable are the brown and the red-breasted penguins, as well as the pelicans, frigate birds and seagulls, among others.

Corrales
The Corrales Inlet at the center of the Archipelago forms a sort of horseshoe made up of the Great Southern Reef Bank and the islands of Esparquí and Rabusquí Larga and Cuchillo and Fernando Cays. At the center of the horseshoe are coral formations filled with colorful fish of all kinds. Deep sea diving is possible from the two ends, because the center is considered a Natural Zone.
