> Historical data
Gil Ramírez Dávalos founded Cuenca on April 12, 1557. It gained its independence on November 3, 1820. Prior to becoming a republic, Ecuador fought the Battle of Tarqui against Peru on February 27, 1829.
In November 1999, UNESCO declared the city a World Cultural Heritage Site.
