Capital of Falcón State, Coro, established in 1527 under the name of Santa Ana de Coro, is one of the first cities founded by the Spaniards in Venezuela. Its conservation of churches, mansions and streets built during the colonial period led to its being declared a National Monument in 1950 and later a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.

Access
Coro can be reached by road from Caracas, Maracaibo and other important cities. Planes fly into José Leonardo Chirinos airport from Maiquetía in only 50 minutes, from Las Piedras in 15 minutes and from Mérida, with stopovers, in 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Tourist Attractions
Colonial area
In this area of cobblestone streets, the most important colonial buildings are carefully preserved: the Cathedral, the Church of San Francisco and the famous old mansions, such as that of the Iron Windows, the Treasure House, and the House of the Sun, among others. The bright red, yellow and ochre hued buildings give Coro the typical gaiety of Venezuela’s coastal towns.

The Cathedral
Located in Plaza Bolívar, this sixteenth century cathedral was the first to be built in the country. It led to the creation of the first diocese to help in the pastoral efforts conducted under Venezuela’s first Bishop, Don Rodrigo de Bastidas, appointed in 1531. The cathedral contains handsome furnishings and images dating from the period. Other churches sprang up around it, such as San Francisco, which still exists today.

House of the Iron Windows
This attractive colonial mansion was build in the mid eighteenth century on Zamora street. Its distinguishing features are its broad baroque style plaster portico and the iron grillwork in its windows, replacing the wooden windows characteristic of the period for the first time.

Médanos
The wind gives the sand dunes in the Médanos National Park of Coro the appearance of engaging in a never-ending dance. Groups of children and adults sliding down the sides of these dunes are a common sight. Don’t lose the opportunity to have fun in the sand.

Vela de Coro
This small port on the Caribbean is famous as the site where Francisco de Miranda raised Venezuela’s flag for the first time. A monument marks the spot, which is visited by large numbers of Venezuelans. Travelers are ferried from this port to the islands of Aruba and Curacao.

Museums
The local museums exhibit important artistic and utilitarian items, giving visitors some idea of the cultural legacy from the colonial era. The Diocesan museum, for example, contains religious furnishings, canvases and ornaments. The lifestyle of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is reflected in the exhibit of the Balcón de los Arcaya Museum. There is also a Contemporary Art Museum displaying the works of local artists over the last few decades.
