WORKING COMMITTEE ON THE DEFENSE OF CONSUMER RIGHTS

The Andean Community considers the defense of consumer rights a key instrument for developing the capacity and potential of production and services in the Subregion and for ensuring that people’s interests are not harmed by the abuse of dominant market positions or other unfair trade practices.

The Andean Council of Foreign Ministers accordingly created the Andean Working Committee for the Defense of Consumer Rights with the Participation of Civil Society, through Decision 539 of March 2003.

That Working Committee was established as a “consultative body within the Andean Integration System to promote the active participation of public and private institutions involved in the defense of consumer rights in the Member Countries, in Andean Community social coordination and decision-making in their areas of interest.”

The Working Committee will report its conclusions and recommendations to the Andean Council of Foreign Ministers or to the Andean Community Commission, as the case may be.
