CIVIL SOCIETY

Civil society plays an organized role in the Andean integration process through the formulation and statement of opinions and viewpoints by the Andean Business and Labor Advisory Councils and dialogue on and the coordination of the interests of indigenous peoples in the CAN. Consumers and the municipalities are also being encouraged
to participate in the process.

 
 
ENTREPRENEURS AND WORKERS
Article 44 of the Cartagena Agreement and Decisions 441, 442 and 464 provide for the organized involvement in the integration process of the business and labor sectors. The two sectors are authorized to put forward their opinions and viewpoints to Andean Integration System (AIS) bodies and institutions and to participate actively, with a right to take part in discussions at meetings having to do with the progress of the subregional integration process.

WORKING GROUP ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
Decision 524 approved by the Andean Council of Foreign Ministers established the "Working Group on the rights of indigenous peoples as a consultative entity within the Andean Integration System to promote the active participation of indigenous peoples in the economic, social, cultural and political spheres of subregional integration."

WORKING COMMITTEE ON THE DEFENSE OF CONSUMER RIGHTS
An Andean Working Group on the Promotion and Protection of Consumer Rights was created by Decision 539, as a consultative body to promote the active participation of public and private institutions involved in the defense of consumer rights in the Andean countries.
