Act of Tarija
Launching of Negotiations for an Association
Agreement between the Andean Community and
the European Union
During the Andean Community
Presidential Summit in Tarija, Bolivia, on
June 14, 2007, the Andean Community
Presidents and the representative of the
European Union formally announced the
launching of negotiations for a
comprehensive Association Agreement.
This Agreement should
constitute an expression of the solidarity
that exists between the two regions and
shall appropriately take into account the
different levels of economic development
between them, as well as the will of the
European Union to recognize the asymmetries
present within the Andean region. This
would be reflected, where pertinent, in
differentiated treatment for Bolivia and
Ecuador.
In line with the joint
Communiqué issued following the Ministerial
meeting in Santo Domingo, the two parties
recognize that the negotiation requires the
firm commitment adopted by the Andean
Community to deepen its regional integration
by rapidly taking the necessary decisions in
key areas.
In witness whereof, this
document is signed in the city of Tarija -
Bolivia, on the fourteenth of June of 2007
